The Possible Mission

Yes, I've made it! Yes, every warrior of the 30 Hour Famine had made it!
for the
The 30 Hour Famine 2010
Segi College Subang, on the 21-22 August 2010.

The 30-Hour Famine is a global movement against hunger and poverty. Participants choose to go without food for 30 hours and get sponsored for giving it up.
The money raised is to used to help children and communities living in poverty.
26 Hours + 4 Hours = 30- Hour Famine
  • For 26hrs: in the college and fast. give up something they love, and learn about global issues, guided by Famine Kit and their respective Camp Leaders.
  • For 4hrs: all DIY Campers come together for an exciting Famine Countdown event where they will end the campaign by breaking fast together.

It was no an easy task to fast for 30 hours. It was not only just fast for fun. During the fasting we need to be prepared and reflect on our own that how lucky we are. We need not to worry about food everyday. All we have to do is just take out some money and get the food that we would like to have. Compare to the children who living in poverty and suffering from great hunger, we are much more luckier than them. Besides, they are not just starve for 30 hours, they maybe be starve for more than 30 hours, everyday.
As we have the ability to help, we lend our hand to the needy. Regardless their skin colour, language and which country they from.

Having fun during the DIY Camp in the campus.

Volunteering @ Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation Center

Finally I have sort out a break time for myself to update my blog. This month is going to be a busy month though! If you are following my blog, I've told you that I will be going to the Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation Center in Petaling Jaya for observation and volunteering.
I managed to shot a very precious picture of the center's signboard. lol!

As they were not very encourage to take pictures of the center, besides taking pictures of the children also prohibited as some of the parents are very sensitive about people taking pictures of their child without permission. Yet we were not allow to put up the any photos of the children with special needs in the blog/ Facebook.

Anyway, the first day of volunteering in the center was rather tiring! Got to wake up early in the morning as you know, the traffic in KL was horrible!

In order to reached the center in PJ on time, we depart from home at 7am. We joint the morning session from 9am to 12pm with the children and teachers.
There were 2 classes going on the day. The classes were allocate according to the child's abilities, not by their age. So there were mostly in the mix age group.

What I found very interesting was the way the teachers communicate with the children. The children were able to understand what the teacher said but somehow they will be a little bit slower to react.

It doesn't matter, as long as the child is able to do what the teacher had said that will be the best.

Beside, Makaton sign do helps a lot in communicating.

Luckily I've learn most of the Makaton sign with my lecture-Ms. Nagas! Love you Ms. Nagas!
I was very impressed on my own that I was able to remember the signs and preformed it!
*wink wink*

When I used Makaton sign to communicate with the children, they understand!!!
I'm so happy when they reflected back the sign to me!  : D

Some of the simple Makaton sign I found on the net:

Anyway, there are too many to tell. But I would rather save it all to my report. HaHa!

It was a meaningful experience for me. Indeed I have an impulse/ urge to be trained in dealing with children with special needs. A therapist maybe?   :)

Happy July!

I am saying hello to everyone on the first day of the month! ;D Well, although it was not a nice day for me but at least I did something 'special' today.

Me and Winnie woke up 6am getting ready for our visit to the Kiwanis Down Syndrom Foundation Center which is located in Petaling Jaya. Visit one of the special needs center actually this is one of the assignments need to be done in the subject (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) that we are taking up in this semester.

We were 4 in a group. Eager with anticipation to visit the center and meeting the children. The plan from the center was having the morning session joining the activities with the children with special needs for the morning session.

And what happened next was we were so unlucky that we were not able to meet the children as the parents- teacher- meet was going on in the school in this week and yet the person in-charged couldn't get to contact us!  :(
So we have to postpone our visit to next week when the school starts.

Anyway, it was a very nice center and the environment was very inviting and friendly. (Will post up more photos on our next visit on next week!)
*Looking forward!*

Wishing everyone a wonderful July.

p/s: Happy Birthday to Mei! :D

Day 4. 29 May 2010, Saturday, the last day in Bali!

After breakfast we headed to a Krishna handy craft center. The things selling there including packet food, souvenirs (key chains, decorations...). different kinds of printed Bali t-shirts, Batik dresses. Those were kinda cheap and the most important- fixed price, no bargain. Phew~

  the couple and Lord Krishna

Camhore!
It was a huge center, everyone was choosing and definitely buying a basket of things.

And we finished shopping!

As told by the driver, the journey from where we were to Ubud was rather far. The point was we have to try the famous Babi Guling! Because this was our last day in Bali!
Anyway, we did try out the local babi guling, but not in Ubud, and it was not famous.

 ... errr...speechless though- :l

Happy photo! After tasting the food.
well, was very appreciated the driver for driving us to find the typical local babi guling which the local people will step in and have it.
When in Rome be a roman.
When in Bali, be a balinese.
:)

Next stop-
Mengwi Temple

Just for fun (' u')v

An insight shot of the temple.

..
Then, Kopi Luwak! xD

Here is the background of it:
Kopi is the Indonesian word for coffee. Luwak is a local name of the Asian palm civet in Sumatra. Palm civets are primarily frugivorous, feeding on berries and pulpy fruits such as from fig trees and palms. Civets also eat small vertebrates, insects, ripe fruits and seeds.
When coffee plants are put into civet habitats, the civets forage on only the ripest and sweetest berries. Hence, farmers would often find their best coffee berries missing in the morning after civets had been feeding and they were seen as pests. Meanwhile farmers hoping to save their crop gathered the civet droppings and found these beans, which were darkened and more brittle, yielded a coffee with unusual taste and lack of bitterness.
(Source from Wikipedia of Kopi Luwak)

The women was explaining the specialties of the coffee tree and how it processes.

Camhore again!
(Greenery scene!)

and we bought this:
There were kinda expensive and we have not much money left though!

LOL! I took the 3rd packet and left one for Iris!

Ok, then we headed to the last stop in Bali...
Here we go, Tanah Lot, for sunset!
Was awesome!

Okay, bye bye BALI!
blurry jump...
:D

The end.
